Ministry in 2012

Since the beginning of 2012, St. James has been hard at work doing ministry. In January, our Social Ministry Committee began working hard to build a food pantry in the back of our fellowship hall with much more shelving than our former food pantry and a bigger space to hold more canned goods for the many needy people in our community.

In a related effort, our Youth had a lock-in and collected 970 canned goods to help fill our bigger food pantry, which was close to empty. Our youth also had a bake sale, soup sale, and loose change collection, which helped them to raise money which would enable us to continue to keep our food pantry full.

Our church is continually collecting canned goods to feed the hungry people in our area. If you have any canned goods that you would like to donate, please drop them off in our office during our open hours Mon-Thurs, 9AM-2PM. May God continue to work through the Food Pantry Ministry here at St. James as we share the love of Christ with all who are in need.

Lutheran Groups at St. James

On January 30, the Lutheran Men in Mission had their quarterly Saxe-Gotha Conference Gathering here at St. James. Wow! What a crowd we had. We welcomed guest speaker, Doug Haugen.

Our Women of the ELCA also met that evening, and made plans for the many different ways in which they will serve people in our congregation and in the community this year. One of those ways is through their annual dinner they provide free of charge to USC students, which will take place in February.

Our Lutheran Girls met on January 14. Their focus this month was on the story of Queen Esther. They had a class in makeup that was based on the story of Esther, and they also received charm bracelets that had charms for each of the skills they have learned this past year.

What fun it is to be Lutheran, and to work and learn together as we share the good news of Jesus Christ in this world!

Dear family and friends,

As we come to the Celebration of our Lord’s birth, Elizabeth and I extend to you and your families our best wishes and thanks.

This year marks the 68^th year of our marriage and the 91^st year of our lives. It’s been an incredible journey, blessed by relationships and activities that have been enriching. We are grateful for expert help for George through Aid to the Blind. Above all we give thanks to God, the Giver.

Our Daily Devotions have been received by you and have been a blessing to us, both in our preparation and in your responses. Your comments boost our spirits and encourage us to continue.

The big news is the completion and publication of my latest book, “THE SLAVE, An incredible Journey.” After three years of research and writing, the Author’s initial copy of the book arrived this week. Needless to say, we are pleased and are excited .

A special word of appreciation goes to our son Johnnie and his wife Vickie for keeping our household operational and providing a very special person, Linda, who comes twice a week to keep us straight. Neither of us drive anymore, so we are especially thankful to them and to all those who take us to Church, meetings, appointments and special events. We are richly blessed.

May Christ enfold you and provide for your spiritual and physical needs in the year ahead.

Advent has been a busy time at St. James! In addition to our Christmas Cantata,

our St. Nicholas Service and Blessing of The Children,

and our Christmas Decoration Giveaway to those in need in our community,

we have also spent time decorating the trees and setting up the sanctuary in preparation for Christmas Day!

All are invited to join us for worship this Christmas. Our Christmas Eve Candlelight service will be at 6:30PM, and our Christmas Morning Worship Service will be on December 25 at 9:30AM.

Occupy Church

This Sunday, December 4, at 4PM, we are holding an event open to the community called "Occupy Church." During this event, we will gather around God's Word in a service of worship to pray for God to guide us as disciples and as Christians of this nation. Everyone is invited: no matter your age, denomination, or political affiliation. Our service will begin outside on the front lawn (weather permitting). Come on out and occupy the church with us!

St. Nicholas Day

All kids are invited to celebrate St. Nicholas Day at St. James this Tuesday, December 6, at 6:30PM. We will have an interactive worship service especially for children, where we will sing well-known children's hymns and get out of our seats and participate during the entire service. St. Nicholas, (also known as Santa Claus), will make an appearance there as well. Each child will be invited forward for a blessing, and cookies and hot chocolate will be provided afterwards! Hope to see you there.

Christmas Decor For Those In Need

Are you in need of free Christmas ornaments and seasonal decorations this year? Be sure to stop by St. James at 9AM on Saturday, December 3. Our Saturday Sisters are sharing the joy of the upcoming Christmas season as they give away their gently-used Christmas and seasonal decor to those who are in need in our community.

Or, perhaps you have your own gently-used Christmas and seasonal decor that you might be able to donate to a family in need of some Christmas cheer this year. The economy is not good for many in our community, so share your wealth by donating seasonal items that you no longer use. As you decorate over the Thanksgiving Holidays, put some items aside to share with those who are less fortunate than you and drop them off at the church on the morning of our Christmas Decor Giveaway.

Reaching Out In Christ's Name

The Women of St. James as well as our Lutheran Girl Pioneers used our time and our skills to put on a bake sale and a cake auction this month. The purpose of all of our baking was to earn money for our sister synod in Tanzania, as our Christian brothers and sisters miles and miles away continue to suffer through a time of drought. The money we earned will go toward the purchase and building of pipelines to make water accessible to these Tanzanian village people.

Another exciting project that we have taken on this Fall has been to help school children at nearby Red Bank Elementary School who go hungry on the weekends because of no food in their homes. We are currently accepting donations of individually pre-packaged foods, such as mac and cheese, ramen noodles, juice boxes, poptarts, fruit or pudding cups, and chef boyardee food items.

Together, we fight hunger and thirst in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to set the prisoner free, to make the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the hungry to be filled, and the world to know of his love!

Spooky Stories at St. James

We had a great time this week at St. James in our Spooky Forest!

Kids got the chance to walk into the belly of a whale to hear the story of Jonah,knock down the giant, Goliath, with a rock and a slingshot,

help Jesus raise up the dead from their graves,

taste locusts, wild honey, and other natural delicacies at John the Baptizer's Feast,

and participate in many other spooky Bible stories and adventures along the way. Thanks to everyone who helped make the event such a fun and spooky one!

Votives for All Saints’ Sunday

On All Saints’ Sunday, November 6, we will give thanks to God together for all of the saints, who now rest from their labors. This year, we are filling up the sanctuary with votive candles in memory of all of our loved ones. If you are interested in having a votive candle lit in memory of a friend or loved one, please call the church office, or fill out a form during worship and leave it in the offering plate. Cost is $2.50 per votive, and you may take yours home with you after the service, if you desire. The deadline for votive orders is Sunday, October 23.

We will be collecting food for local school children who go hungry on the weekends. We are filling backpacks with individually wrapped items including microwaveable cups of mac & cheese, microwaveable Chef-Boyardee items, individually wrapped grits, oatmeal, and cereal packets, boxed juices, granola bars, packs of crackers, pop-tarts, fruit cups, applesauce cups, and pudding cups. Zumba and Yoga

Weekly Zumba classes and yoga classes are beginning on October 11 and 12 in the Fellowship hall. On Tuesdays, Zumba will be at 6:30PM with Yoga at 7:30PM. The InBetweeners Sunday School Class has started a new series which takes current events from the headline news and shows us how to apply the Bible, our faith and our beliefs in responding and addressing these issues. Also, the lesson is sent to all class members via e-mail, usually Thursday or Friday, so they can read more about what's going to be discussed on Sunday morning. After the Ascension of Christ, the apostles divided up the word into territories to be evangelized, with Spain falling to St. James the Greater. James spent a number of years preaching and spreading the good news of Christ in Spain, and to this day, the Spanish refer to him as, “Santiago.” Every year on July 25th, Spain celebrates St. James with processions, fireworks, altars made of shells, and pilgrims flocking there from all over the world.

St. James Sunday

This past Sunday everyone was given a seashell pin to wear! The shell is the symbol of St. James the Greater, the saint for whom our church is named. Pilgrims travel along the coastline of Spain to walk along “The Way of St. James” every year at this time in his honor. As they walk, they pick up shells and affix them to their hats and on their person. Yesterday, July 24th, when we picked up a shell, it represented our own earthly pilgrimage as we follow Jesus.

American Red Cross Appeal for Blood Donors

The American Red Cross has issued an appeal for blood donors of all types due to a critical blood shortage across our nation. Many donors are busy or traveling, school is out of session and donations have dropped dramatically. In May and June, while demand for blood products remained steady, donations were at the lowest level the Red Cross has seen during this timeframe in more than a dozen years. Because of that, the Red Cross needs blood donors now more than ever. All types are needed. Please call 1-800-RED CROSS or redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.

Youth Outreach Project

The youth will be at Lake Murray Dam next Saturday, July 30, to hand out bottled water to the walkers and runners with a special message from St. James attached to it. We will meet at the church at 9AM. Afterwards, we are planning to go swimming at the Lake Murray beach! Don't forget to bring your bathing suit, a towel, and money for the concession stand!

Water for Walkers

We are in need of cases of bottled water for the youth for their outreach project, “Water for Walkers.” One Saturday in July, they will distribute water to the walkers and runners at the Lake Murray Dam with a message from St. James attached to it. Pennies For Pasta

Our toddler class has placed plastic bottles marked with our Pennies For Pasta stickers throughout the church. Please throw your extra pennies into the bottles. These pennies will be used to purchase pasta for our food pantry. There are also bottles located in the front office if you want to stop in during office hours!

Kids and Youth VBS!!!

It’s finally here! Calling All Secret Agents: Come to VBS this week on Monday to Thursday from 5:30-8PM. We will begin each night with a meal, and then all agents will go through obstacle courses; decode secret messages; and follow clues to find out more about Jesus. Our youth group will also be meeting for games and bible study on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights after our meal. The entire church is invited to join us for a cookout on Friday, June 24, at 5:30PM for our VBS party. The kids will sing their VBS songs and receive their certificates as we celebrate what a fun week we had.

Summer Afternooners

Since several people wanted to go to Old McDonald Fish Camp last month and couldn't go, we are going one more time, so don't miss this chance. You will need money for supper and to help your driver with gas. We will meet at the church on Thursday, June 23, at 3:30PM. Summer Afternooners

The Summer Afternooners had their first get together on May 26 at the Old McDonald's Fish Farm in North Augusta. A good time was had by all! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. They enjoyed the beautiful scenery outside and feeding the ducks. Can't wait till the next gathering!

Confirmation Service and Potluck Supper

Sunday, June 12, is Pentecost, and it is also Confirmation Sunday! A number of our students at St. James are being confirmed during the 10:30AM worship service. Afterwards, the whole congregation is invited to help us celebrate the event with a pot luck supper. Bring a dish to share as we honor these young people and give thanks to God for his sustaining presence in their lives.

Let’s Eat!
The Summer Afternooners (a new christian fellowship group at St. James) are planning a dutch treat to Old McDonald's Fish Camp in North Augusta Thursday, May 26. We need a head count on this trip in order to notify the restaurant and to arrange rides. We will leave the church parking lot at 3:45 p.m. in order to be there when the restaurant opens at 5 p.m. so we can be home before dark. You will need money to pay for your supper and a few dollars to help your driver pay for gas. If you can drive and have extra seats for riders, please call the church office. Hope to see you then!

God Rockz is a group for all children at St. James of the congregation that meets monthly. This month we will be meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 6PM for dinner followed by games, a bible story, and a service project/craft until 7:30PM. Come along and bring a friend. Harvest Hope and Food Pantry

Thanks to all who came out and helped distribute food for the food pantry last Tuesday! We helped feed over 100 needy people in our community! Also, we were able to supply them with dog and cat food which had some in tears, they were so thankful. Thanks to all who donate and support our food pantry!

Holy Week Activities

We had a great time at St. James during Holy Week this year.

It all began with the waving of palm branches and the singing of Hosannas. It included a footwashing service on Maundy Thursday and a Tenebrae service on Good Friday. Then, we had a weekend of celebrating Christ's resurrection, beginning with an Easter Egg Party and Egg Hunt. Alleluia! Christ is risen!

Easter Sunrise Service and Breakfast

Each year the Red Bank Community has a Easter Sunrise Service and Breakfast. Three churches in the area, St. James Lutheran Church, Red Bank Baptist Church, and Red Bank United Methodist Church, alternate the service and the breakfast. Zumba Fitness at St. James

Calling Cards for Soldiers

During the month of March, the Social Ministry Committee collected over $200.00 from our congregation to provide calling cards for a group of soldiers from Batesburg, SC, who are stationed in Afghanistan. ~Shrove Tuesday Prayer~

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for it is from your goodness that we have this day to celebrate on the threshold of the Season of Lent.

Tomorrow we will fast. Today we feast. We thank you for the abundance of gifts you shower upon us. We thank you especially for one another. As we give you thanks, we are mindful of those who have so much less than we do. As we share these wonderful gifts together, we commit ourselves to greater generosity toward those who need our support.
Prepare us for tomorrow. Tasting the fullness of what we have today, let us experience some hunger tomorrow. May our fasting make us more alert so that we might be ready to hear your Word and respond to your call.
As our feasting fills us with gratitude, so may our fasting hollow out in us an attentiveness to hear the cry of the poor. May our self-denial turn our hearts to you and give us a new freedom for generous service to others.
We ask you these graces with our hearts full of delight and stirring with readiness for the journey ahead. We ask them with confidence in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Social Ministry at St. James

Saturday Sisters

The Saturday Sisters is a group of women from St. James that meets together on the first Saturday morning of every month at 8:30AM for study and prayer. All ladies of the church are invited to join us this Saturday, March 5, in the parlor as we begin discussing our newest book, One Month to Live, by Kerry and Chris Shook. At this meeting, we will also be organizing our new monthly project, which is supporting the Cancer Center at Lexington Medical Center.

WELCA Sunday

This Sunday, February 27th, was Bold Women's Day, a day when the Women of the ELCA led us in celebrating all women followers of Jesus, who take risks on account of the gospel. The mission of the Women of the ELCA is to mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. During our worship service, we honored Mrs. Helen Monts, (11/5/26-10/10/10), a woman who was bold in her faith and who was a faithful member of the Women of the ELCA throughout her lifetime. We give thanks for Helen and for so many others like her, who make Christ known in this church and in the world.

All Lutheran women are invited to take part in monthly Women of the ELCA meetings beginning with a shared dinner with the Lutheran Men in Mission at 6:30PM, and then breaking up into our groups for bible study and service projects. Check our church calendar online to find out when our next meeting will be held.
The Women of the ELCA at St. James is also starting a new group for the girls of our church called Lutheran Girl Pioneers, that will meet regularly to hear about women in the Bible and to practice basic skills together including sewing, cooking, babysitting, and other fun activities. Our first Lutheran Girl Pioneers meeting will be held on Saturday, March 26, at 9:30 AM. Please call the church office for more details.

Sharing God's Love

Last Sunday, in honor of St. Valentine and in thankfulness for the love of God shown to us in Christ Jesus, we had a marriage and friendship blessing during worship at St. James. We also sang lots of hymns about God's love, and we heard again about God's call for us to love one another. A few days later, the children of our church created blooming Valentines for the shut-ins.

Currently, the toddlers in our church are collecting new toys for Happy Wheels, Columbia. These toys will be given to children in our local hospitals. People of all ages at St. James love sharing God's love with others.

Souper Bowl of Caring

The youth at St. James are raising money to fight hunger with their annual Souper Bowl of Caring drive. This week, they had a bake sale. Next week, they'll sell soup. And finally, on Super Bowl Sunday, they'll collect money in soup cans. All of these collections will go to helping the hungry. This is just one more way that our kids are spreading Christ's love in Lexington, SC.

God Rockz Rocks!

God Rockz, our kids' group at St. James, had a blast last Wednesday as they kicked off a new year of learning, service projects, games, and crafts. As they learned the story of Moses, they broke out of jail, sang songs, crossed the Red Sea, and went on a hunt around the church for the 10 commandments. Afterwards, they decorated crosses to give out to our new visitors each Sunday. God Rockz meets monthly on Wednesday nights from 6-7:30 PM. Dinner is provided. Check the chuch calendar on our home page to find out which Wednesday we'll meet next. We hope you'll bring your kids out to learn more Bible stories and participate in more service projects with us throughout this year! All kids are welcome.

Wisemen at Worship

Where are you, wisemen? We're still waiting for the 3 wisemen to find their way to the Christ child. Join us this Sunday, January 9, as we celebrate Epiphany and we read again about the wisemen's harrowing journey to Bethlehem, when they brought our Lord gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We will have an interactive hunt for the Christ child during our worship service as well as a special appearance from the 3 wisemen. Don't miss out on this fun time of celebration and excitement as we all bow down and worship the Christ child together!
